Concept Development - Colour pallet.

Taking my chosen thumbnail I refined a line sketch for it. I used a two point perspective grid to ensure that the perspective was correct. An easy way to build a perspective grid in Adobe Photoshop is to use the polygon tool, change it to a star shape and give it 100 sides. Position these stars along the eye level of the composition.
Using reference images to give me a specific colour pallet I began to add colour to my sketch. The colour picker tool was used to pick the colours directly from the reference images. Each colour was placed on a separate layer, which will give me better control over the detail in each area later in the development process.

The first colour pallet example was more appealing to me than this one, I think this is because of the fantasy element. Although I prefer the first colour pallet I wanted to experiment with a different colour pallet that would push the piece closer to the wild west theme of the character. After seeing this version I believe that it will better suit the overall theme of each concept.

In order to add more life to these examples, I added the impression of a light source through the use of shadow. This was created on a separate multiply layer, with the opacity reduced. I painted a dark gray colour in any areas that I thought would cast a shadow.

Shadow casts can be calculated in a similar way that perspective grids are used. A light source point is created and a shadow vanishing point, the intersecting lines determine where the shadow should fall off.

The finished results are compelling and I am looking forward to working further detail into this concept.
