Introduction to 3D Animation

Nerdy Girl Rant animatic. Made using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premier pro.

Introduction to 3D Animation - Final Storyboard

My final storyboard idea for this project. I decided to change my animation because I was not happy with the level of difficulty displayed in 'The Fruity Idea' animation. This idea includes 20 seconds of lip sync and pushes my skills to pose a character, displaying advanced poses that convey emotions.

EXT. SMALL PERSONAL OFFICE DAY

A young nerdy girl is sitting in a computer chair in the middle of the day, the window is open in the background displaying a blue sky. Looking into her webcam PANSER is looking very excited while explaining some of WOW's new features, in a sarcastic tone. PANSER uses body language to emphasize what she is saying, waving her hands around as much as possible to try and get her point across.

(using hand gestures to emphasize each point)
When Blizzard added Coalfist in the game I was so excited, because I have been camping for Poundfist for so long and you know I love camping like that's totally okay. But, the fact that they made it a little bit easier for everyone to get this other cool mount.(dramatic pause) So cool. So cool.

Introduction to 3D Animation - Bouncing A Ball

Animating a bouncing ball sounds like a simple task when you think about it. Although it is the things that you don't think about which will trip you up. First you should block out the animation of the ball bouncing, the highest point of the ball and the point at which the ball is on the ground should be key frames.

Once you have the ball moving as it were, you then need to think about energy. The ball should accelerate faster towards the ground and slow down as it comes to its highest point. To do this you need to break the tangent curves by using the graph editor. The motion curve should look like this, with a sharp point where the ball hits the ground. Notice how the tops of the motion curve are not as steep.

Now comes the extremely difficult part....I jest, it is just as easy. You need to add squash and stretch to the object, visualising the build up and release of energy that allows the object to bounce. This is done by scaling the object and setting key frames at specific points on the timeline. Here you can see that the motion curves for the X,Y and Z scale attributes are symmetrical. This is because the object should never change volume, if you scale the object in the Y axis then you must also scale the object in the X and Z axis in order to maintain this volume. Usually you will find the the scale values on the X and Z axis will be equal to each other, unless the object hits something other than the floor or your animating jelly because you are cool.

In this example you can see the stages of the ball as it travels through the bounce. Notice that the ball stretches in anticipation of the bounce. This does not happen in real life but many animations will include it because it mimics motion blur. As the ball hits the floor it gets squashed but maintains its volume.

Introduction to 3D Animation - The Fruity Idea Script

EXT. PARK WALL DAY

A young man is sitting on a wall in the middle day, birds are flying through the sky and singing happily. With his legs crossed FRANK is confidently throwing an apple into the air and catching
it repeatedly, an expression of intense thought on his face. FRANK stops and takes a big bite out of the apple, proceeding to chew the chunk of apple loudly. As he chews the chunk of apple his expression begins to turn from one of thought, to one of realisation.

FRANK
(with one finger pointing in the air. Confidently)
Eureka.

Introduction to 3D Animation - Humorous Script

One sock leads a march of socks in pairs to the dryer. "Alright lads, I lost Jimmy in the wash. stick together and remember the buddy system. This could be a rough ride".

INT. DOMESTIC UTILITY ROOM NIGHT

In a small utility room there are piles of wet clothes are strewn across the floor and the low hum of a washing machine can be heard in the background. Through the window is a clear night sky, with the moonlight illuminating the room where pairs of socks line up in a military fashion. Socks of all colours and patterns. At the head of the line is BOB with a camouflage pattern, a stern look on his face as he leads the other socks on their mission into the dryer.

KEVIN
(looking at the sock next to him. Whispered)
What happened to Jimmy.

BOB
(Looking forward. Military orders)
Alright lads, I lost Jimmy in the wash. stick together and remember the buddy system. This could be a rough ride.

The socks begin to jump into the dryer with BOB standing at the side, watching them carefully. KEVIN and STUART pause before entering the washing machine, KEVIN has a frightful look on his face. Once all the other socks are in the dryer BOB does a summersault into the dryer, pulling the door shut as he goes.
