Concept Development - Character Proportions

Correct proportions are what make a realistic character believable but a stylized character can break these rules, in order to exaggerate personality traits. As always, before you break the rules you have to know them well enough. If you push too far beyond realistic proportion then the audience will not relate with the character as well, because they do not recognize the proportions and see it as a foreign element.

Stewie Griffin is built from a series of simple shapes and as he is a baby his proportions reflect this. Though the character is stylized to have a large head in proportion to his body the character still reads as a baby, because the proportions have been pushed from that of a baby.
